Building Cabin Logic: Our Airplane Seating Puzzle Game

Our newest game takes a familiar situation — finding the right seat on a plane — and turns it into a timed mobile logic puzzle.

Cabin Logic is an upcoming airplane seating puzzle game from Control Gaming. Instead of simply choosing any empty seat, each passenger arrives with requirements that determine where they can — and sometimes cannot — sit.

The idea is deliberately easy to understand: read the passenger's clues, inspect the cabin and work out the correct seat. The difficulty comes from combining multiple conditions while the clock is running.

Turning seat preferences into logic puzzles

Cabin Logic uses familiar seating ideas as puzzle rules. A passenger might need a window or aisle seat, require extra leg room, need to sit toward the front or back of the cabin, avoid a middle seat, or be assigned to a specific seat.

Other requirements connect passengers to one another. Groups may need to sit together, certain passengers may need to stay apart, a parent may need to sit with a baby, and some puzzles require an empty seat beside a passenger. Combining these rules lets a simple cabin layout produce increasingly involved logic problems.

Making the levels harder without making them confusing

One of the main development challenges has been increasing difficulty while keeping every puzzle readable. Early levels can introduce one clear requirement at a time. Later levels can combine several restrictions, larger groups and tighter seating possibilities so that the player has to reason through the cabin rather than react to a single clue.

Cabin Logic is also timed, so difficulty is not only about finding a valid seat. Players need enough time to read each passenger's requirements, consider the available seats and make a decision. We have been testing and adjusting level timers around the complexity of the passengers rather than giving every puzzle the same amount of time.

Tools for recovering from mistakes

The game includes four gameplay tools: Undo, Auto Seat, +30s and Swap. They are designed to help when a puzzle becomes difficult without removing the need to understand the seating rules.

  • Undo reverses a seating decision.
  • Auto Seat helps place a passenger correctly.
  • +30s adds time when the clock is becoming the problem.
  • Swap gives players another way to recover from an awkward seating situation.

What we're building toward

Our aim is for Cabin Logic to start as a straightforward seating puzzle and gradually become a much deeper deduction challenge. The game is being built for iPhone, with hundreds of levels planned and new combinations of passenger requirements used to keep later puzzles varied.

Cabin Logic is currently in development and will join STAXED, Flick & Match, Recycle Rush and Don't Pop in the Control Gaming catalogue.
